Each group has but one primary purpose—to carry its message to the sex addict who still suffers.

(Tradition Five)

An open meeting is one that welcomes anyone who wants to know more about the SAA program.  Typically, this may include:  spouses, family members, friends, clergy, social workers, nursing students, etc.  The 44 ‘closed’ SAA meetings are intended for persons who have acknowledged that they have a sexual addiction or those trying to determine if their personal struggles qualify as sexual addiction.

It is critical, then, that an open group meets consistently and that there are experienced members present who can answer visitor’s questions and share the experience, strength and hope they have acquired from working the SAA 12-Step program of recovery.

Ranga N., who has championed the Thursday Night Open Meeting for many years, is often the only person in attendance with a true understanding of 12-Step recovery.  Many of the people who start their recovery journey at the Open Meeting have been ordered to do so by a counselor or therapist connected to the legal system.  The downtown location of the meeting makes it convenient for those who rely on bus transportation to get to meetings.  These factors result in a meeting whose attendees are often inexperienced members of the program and/or members who are not fully committed to working a strong 12-Step recovery program.

It is critically important for Sex Addicts Anonymous in Indiana to have at least one vibrant, open meeting.  That is why there is an ongoing need to have at least a few ‘old-timers’ and/or program enthusiasts in attendance at every Open Meeting.

Please support the Open Meeting by committing to attend at least once a quarter.  If each meeting group commits to have just two members attend each quarter, this will more than fill the gap.
